The Lord of the Creatures, aka The Lord of the Monsters, is a cancelled PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 game by Arvirago Entertainment.
It was to be a sword and sorcery RPG.

Gameplay

You play as one of eight magicians, male or female.
Each has different spells, skills, and stats.
There was to be five different types of mana and lots of spells to cast.

As a Lord, you could lord over the 100 creatures of the world.
You can use magic to combine creatures and use them in your army.
You can even mount them and attack castles owned by other Lords.

You could either battle the monsters solo, or play online with other players.

Development

The Lord of the Creatures began as a PC exclusive title.
Development was shifted to the PS3 and Xbox 360 midway through 2006.
As funding tried up the team tried to downscale the game to iOS devices.

Cancellation

The was cancelled due the global economic crisis of 2007-2008.
Atari was helping fund the game but the economic turmoil hit them hard.
They withdrew funding, prompting this ambitious project to wither and die.

Timeline:

  • late 2002: development begins
  • mid-2003: game unveiled at E3 2003
  • mid-2005: initial cancellation. Atari then becomes the publisher, game uncancelled
  • mid-2006: development shifts to the PS3 and 360
  • mid-2006: Atari injects money to edit things and speed development along
  • mid-2008: Atari drops out, game has no publisher
  • December 2008: iPhone and iPad are announced as potential platforms for the game
  • 2009: game finally seems to be cancelled
  • late-2010: official website goes offline
