Shadows of Reality is a cancelled PC MMO game by Nevolution Software.
It was to be an online 3D first-person cyberpunk RPG.

Plot

Shadows of Reality was set in a cyberpunk world in the year 2087, where humans have been augmented with technology.
The setting was to be the The Grid, the location of the cyberspace you must explore.
It would all be in a 3D-rendered real-time persistence world.

Gameplay

When you start a new character you can choose the occupation.
Much like a character class, this occupation gives you set stats and a skill tree.
You build up from there. Classes include police, scientist, mercenary, doctor, and more.

The game was to be have a player-killing system.
Players levelled 1-5 cannot be targeted for player-killing. Levels 6-12: PKing optional.
Level 13-20 has PKing enabled by default.

Development

The game started off as BlackOps in 1998.
The game's name was changed to Shadows of Reality due to possessing a similar name to BlackOps Entertainment.
This change happened around 1999.

Cancellation

In 2001 the game was cancelled due to lack of funding.
Nevolution Software then went defunct.

Timeline:

  • 1998: development starts as BlackOps
  • 1999: game is retitled to Shadows of Reality
  • 2001: game is cancelled
