Guardians: Agents of Justice is a cancelled PC game by Simtex.
It was to be like a turn-based strategy game, like X-COM but with superheroes.

Plot

The year is 2091 and the world's governments are crumbling under social decay and degeneracy.
The rampant pollution has mutated the people into super mutants.
These mutants formed three crime organisations: Tech Lords, the Claw, and the Shadowyn.

Some of these mutants aren't into crime, but rather, see a duty to stop it.
These peace-seeking mutants form the Star Council.
Now they seek to dish out justice to evildoers.

Gameplay

There was 42 characters to play as, and 14 that you can customize.
There was to be 46 powers, each of which can be upgraded three times.
With 32 types of power modifications, 17 skills, and eight character attributes, it was to be big.

Successful battles will net you experience points to upgrade your stats or powers.
The four stats to upgrade are strength, health, intellect, and dexterity.
The powers range from lvl 1 to 10.

The powers are interesting in that there are power masteries.
These are modifications that can be toggled on and off e.g. auto-fire.
When the power mastery is used it decreases that power by one point.

Completing missions will also get you fame points.
These are used for improving your base and recruiting superheroes.
The higher the base level, the faster you can dispatch your heroes to danger zones.

The Campaign would have thirty missions, but only twenty of them are required for completion.

Unlike X-COM, the environment was fully destructible and malleable by your actions.
For multiplayer there was to be 1v1 with either LAN or modem.

Cancellation

Guardians: Agents of Justice was cancelled in 1998.
Simtex tried upgrade the graphics and gameplay but soon went defunct in 1997.
Microprose then closed their Texas office in 1998, ending this game once and for all.
