Decay is a cancelled PC game by Insomnia Software.
It was to be a stealth FPS following the trend Thief set.

Plot

It is the year 2005. You play as Jake Blisser, a hitman framed for murder.
To avoid death how, you choose to join the Law Enforcement Agency's reform program.
Now you have to help curb the rise of organised crime.

Gameplay

A the beginning of the game you customize Jake and allocated his stat points a la Fallout.
The abilities you gain are based on skill point allocation.

You can pick and choose which missions to embark on from your homebase.
Prepare for mission before departure, including stocking up on guns and ammo.

Development

Decay was to use a brand new engine: the DVA-engine (Dynamic Visibility Analysis).
It was a state of the art engine that boasted of realism.
It rendered everything on the fly, not a BSP-tree or Portals.

Cancellation

Decay was cancelled in 2000 for reasons unknown.
Insomnia Software was forced by copyright to change their name. They chose Termite Games.
Part of this game were reworked into New World Order, released in 2003.

Timeline:

  • Q4 1998: development begins.
  • Q3 1999: Interplay becomes the game's publisher.
  • Q1 2000: Insomnia Software is forced to change names and becomes becomes Termite Games.
  • Q4 2000: development ceases, Decay is cancelled.
