Dead Space aka A.I. Alien Intelligence is a cancelled PC by Flatline Studios.
It was to be a real-time strategy game.

Gameplay

The goal is basically to control and spread Galactic territory across the universe.
Raiders seek your supplies and aliens want to take your territory for themselves.

Checklist of what's in store:

  • 6 different races to play as
  • 9 different ships for each race (54 ships total)
  • 7 different ship hull types
  • 42 different ship hull designs
  • 8 different categories of technology
  • 150+ different technologies to research
  • 5 different planetary terrains with weather features
The six alien races
Psionids strong at physic powers
Strixthes insect-like with a Queen ruling them
Metalloids liquid metal hivemind that obey The One
Munzoid fierce warriors that never surrenders
Drache anarchic former slaves, strong at agriculture
Arkanains thieving rogues and great inventors

A.I. Alien Intelligence was unique in that there was no traditional campaign or missions.
Just pick a race and do the 4x: explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate.

To upgrade and sustain your empire you would need to gather the three resources.
The resources are pooled into one collection, so you can use them on any planet at any time.

Resources
Currency builds units, ships, and buildings
Organics feeds your units and allows for population growth
Radioactives used to build nuclear-powered things

Researching tech improves your empire.
There were eight categories to research:

  • Weaponry
  • Engineering
  • Physics
  • Medical
  • Propulsion
  • Planetary
  • Electronics
  • Construction

Each planet has different terrain and weather and they are huge.
You can fit all of Warcraft II's maps on some of the larger maps.
They are also randomly generated upon launching, and have lots of Easter eggs to find.

Cancellation

A.I. Alien Intelligence was cancelled in 1999.
Interplay screwed over Flatline Studios in the publishing deal, so Flatline shelved A.I..
This lead to Flatline Studios dissolving shortly after.

Timeline:

  • 1997: game begins development as Dead Space
  • 1998: renamed to A.I. Alien Intelligence
  • 1999: game cancelled, Flatline dissolved soon after
