Dawn is a cancelled PC MMORPG by Glitchless.
It was to be a fantasy RPG.

Gameplay

The world of Dawn would be a single giant world, not divided into zones.
The playing area was said to be huge at around 65,000 square miles.
The world is like a spherical globe, meaning if you travel in one direction you'll eventually loop.

The map was planned to have up to 100k players simultaneously.
This world is vast and yet empty: all villages and structures are to be built by the players.
Your houses and structures remain after death, so you can move in with a new character.

There were many races to play as:

  • Gnome
  • Galatai
  • Mesmer
  • Solon
  • Troll

Dawn was an MMORPG that allowed players to be either good or evil.
Permadeath meant every decision mattered.
The devs said that if your connection drops your character will be controlled by AI.

PvP is a given, but with no way to tell how strong a person is, you were in constant danger.
There was no limits in place, so high level PKers can slay noobs if they wish.
There are resurrection spells but they don't come cheap. Death by game by is free resurrection.

Defeat in battle does not always mean death: you can play dead and hope the danger passes.
Pretending to be dead still makes you vulnerable to robbers and looters though.
Animal NPCs don't respawn so much as other animal NPCs bang and the offspring spawn in.

Being in character is a must. You can be racist and sexist so long as it is within character.
Infringing the sacred rule of breaking character will result in punishment.

Development

Dawn was basically worked on by one man named Jeff Friedman.
By late 2001 he shifted focus to his released MMO, Race War Kingdom.
Race War Kingdom is a microtransaction-heavy dump, presumably to raise money to fund Dawn.

In early 2002 Glitchless had a new project in the works: Project X.
This was to be Xbox and PC MMORPG with medieval aesthetics.
It's similarities to Dawn spurred commentators to call it a re-branding or a scam.

Cancellation

Dawn never materialized and all development ceased by 2005.
Unable to secure the 'millions' needed for Dawn, Friedman folded the project.
The website is still up as of 2022, with it's Dawn page unedited since 2005.

Video

Trailer of sorts from around 2002.
